Paul L. Maier in his book THE FIRST CHRISTMAS where he makes a good

argument for suggesting that Christ may well have been born in June.

The reason he mentions this is that shepherds would not have their flocks

out in the winter due to the cold. A friend of mine in Israel supports that

suggestion. In studying church history we need to remember that the

Roman Catholic Church has set certain dates like Christmas in order

to "compromise" with pagans in order that they join the RCC.

They (RCC) would "christianize" certain pagan days in order to get pagans

to join them. To me christmas is not so much a religious holiday as it is for

time to gather with family and to have a great day of celebration and

to watch as children opened  their gifts.

Thank you for your post.

You are absolutely correct that the Roman Catholic Church

accepted and absorbed the practices of other groups, even pagans

in order to supposedly convert them.

In practice it was more entrapment.

Now the point you gave about what you like about Christmas,

I can understand, but in order to be obedient we should not really compromise.

There are 364 other days when we can meet with our families

and give gifts, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

A life style of giving and strong family ties is what our calling is all about

and what is sadly lacking in society today.

We do our children a great disservice when we lie to them about things

like Santa Claus which are fables

and then somehow expect them to always tell the truth.

It certainly messes their minds up.

I guarantee that if you kept a family get together one day in the summer

and gave gifts to all your family who attended, they will never ever forget it.

These will be genuine gifts as you will not be expecting anything in return.

Who remembers who gave what when you receive many gifts,

often unwanted, from many people?

My principle of giving is 'give until it hurts,

expecting absolutely nothing in return.'

It is different but truly wonderful.

This is very easy to say, but I assure you that it is physically impossible,

without the empowerment of the Eternal God.

Attending some Church, going up to an altar call, or isolating yourself,

in the hope that somehow it will all be alright, will not do it.
