Passover And Unleavened Bread
By Peter James from:
There are few organisations, which observe the Passover,
and days of Unleavened Bread, as commanded in the Bible.
There are many churches, which celebrate communion,
at a time, which they deem to be suitable, and convenient.
At the top of the pile, is the Roman Catholic Church, where ‘Mass’,
can be celebrated several times a day, in the same church.
Each service can include ‘Holy Communion’.
Document: The Abomination Of The Mass
The church of Rome believes in the perpetual ongoing sacrifice of Christ,
but Christ only died once for all of us.
Hebrews 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many;
and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time
without sin unto salvation.
Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through
the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
When the nation of Israel, that is all twelve tribes, were freed from
the tyranny of Egypt, they were commanded to slay a lamb,
on the evening, when they were going to be freed.
The blood of the lamb, was to be daubed over the door to the house,
on the lintels. This mark of blood, meant that when the death angel,
who was none other than the LORD, Himself,
saw the blood, he would ‘pass over’, the house.
Exodus 12:22 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop,
and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel
and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason;
and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.
Exodus 12:23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians;
and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts,
the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer
to come in unto your houses to smite you.
The result was that none of the occupants,
nor the animals in the house would die.
They were commanded to do this forever.
It was an annual event.
The Israelites did not have any choice, regarding when they could do this.
It was on a specific day, at a specific time, which is very clearly defined.
As this day only turned up once in the year, it was an annual event.
Of course the same applied to the related Days of Unleavened Bread.
It is such an important event that it is mentioned several times.
Here are 3 of these times.
Leviticus 23:5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even
is the LORD’S passover.
We are given many specifics about this period of time.
Numbers 9:3 In the fourteenth day of this month, at even,
ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it,
and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it.
We are told that we should eat unleavened bread at this time.
Exodus 12:18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month
at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth
day of the month at even.
Is this not a lot of needless old-fashioned fuss,
which is no longer applicable today?
We need to understand, that everything that the Eternal God commands
is for a specific reason. Often we chose to ignore it,
because we think that it is pointless.
The Eternal God never tells us to do anything by a ‘whim’.
In His supreme wisdom, the Eternal God chose, leaven to represent sin.
The reason is that leaven, which is ‘yeast’ is absolutely everywhere.
It is in the air.
You can clean your house as much as you like,
you will never be able to ‘de-leaven’ it.
This is much more than finding a few crumbs under a carpet, etc.
If you have the time, you can make leavened bread,
or leavened anything come to that, by utilizing the yeast in the atmosphere.
So this means that sin is absolutely everywhere.
For many years I have been saying that Eve was telling the truth,
when she said, that she was commanded not to touch the forbidden
fruit, as well as not to eat it.
Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst
of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it,
neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
We must touch sin, period.
Just as leaven puffs up, sin also puffs up,
resulting in envy, pride, and jealousy.
The Old Testament laws were much easier to keep,
than the New Testament commandments.
Few Believers understand this.
Document: Ordinances And Their Consequences
In a sense it is only the tenth commandment,
that really linked the Old Testament,
with the New Testament commandments, because,
Thou shalt not covet, deals with the mind.
The other commands were straightforward statements, such as
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery, etc.
When we move to the New Testament, as I stated,
the bar is raised considerably.
The root of sin is shown to be in the mind.
Therefore if we think to sin, we have sinned.
Document/Video/Audio: What Is Sin?
Christ explained the principle here:
Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you,
That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her
hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Of course the Old Testament sacrifices of the Passover Lamb,
did not, and could not remove sin.
This had to wait until Christ died for this to take place.
We can now see, that the New Testament Passover is of immeasurably
greater significance, than the Old Testament Passover.
What should be our focus in the 21st Century?
Should we be worrying about de-leavening our homes?
Should we be eating unleavened bread.
I would say that we should do so, to remind us of the great
importance of this time, and to have it hammered into our minds,
that sin should be avoided all the time.
Is the above not a contradiction?
Are you not picking and choosing?
The New Testament requirements of a believer are far higher,
as I have stated.
We have to spend our time rooting sin out of our lives,
rather than leaven out of our houses.
Christ specifically warned us against the real leaven.
Matthew 16:6 Then Jesus said unto them,
Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
What is this leaven?
Luke 12:1 . . . he (Christ) began to say unto his disciples first of all,
Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
As we approach this Passover, the warning is crystal clear,
are you a hypocrite?
If you are not dealing with the real issues,
which you need to confront, you are a hypocrite.
There is no worse place that you can be.
If you are just a little bit hypocritical, that is still a very bad situation.
This verse is telling us that it is only a matter of time,
before unrighteousness completely saturates your whole being.
Think carefully about this.
1 Corinthians 5:6 Your glorying is not good.
Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
First of all should we be keeping the Feast of Unleavened Bread today?
The apostle Paul, he told us that we should do so.
He then went on to point out, two major areas that we should address,
malice and wickedness.
1 Corinthians 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven,
neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness;
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Here are some details of malice and wickedness.
The apostles Paul and Peter,
were both speaking to the true believers.
This was the condition in the church.
Titus 3:3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish,
disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures,
living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
1 Peter 2:1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile,
and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
I have laboured tirelessly trying to help everyone to understand,
two basic things about the New Testament.
The first is that all the epistles, or letters of the apostles,
were addressed directly to the churches, in various areas.
They were not addressed to the world at large.
The apostle Paul is admonishing us about how we should conduct
ourselves with a brother, who is clearly a blatant sinner.
1 Corinthians 5:11
But now I have written unto you not to keep company,
if any man that is called a brother
be a fornicator,
or an idolater,
or a railer, (revilers)
or a drunkard,
or an extortioner;
with such an one no not to eat.
This is also speaking to believers.
1 Corinthians 6:9 ¶ Know ye not that the unrighteous
shall not inherit the kingdom of God?
Be not deceived:
nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
1 Corinthians 6:10
shall inherit the kingdom of God.
The second is that the book of Revelation is addressed
to true Believers.
I also recommend Revelation Chapters 2 & 3,
because they are the words of Christ, and they tell in very
easy to understand words, what is wrong amongst
the true believers, today.
I am always stressing that there are many ‘so called Christians’,
who believe that the commandments are no longer applicable.
The reality is that keeping the commandments is just not enough,
as Revelation Chapters 2 & 3, and Chapter 12 state.
This is the important, and very real message of the New Testament.
It is the very opposite of what ‘Churchianity’ teaches, and practices.
They say that they are under grace, and really anything goes.
This is probably Satan’s biggest lie.
The soon coming tribulation is going to show the great gulf,
between the righteous, and the unrighteous,
and there will truly be weeping and gnashing of teeth,
as believers will be completely distraught, when they fully understand
how they have been deceived.
Does eating unleavened bread during this time make you more righteous?
Of course it does not.
When Christ sets up His kingdom, will the days of Unleavened Bread,
and the Passover, be kept?
I will ask you a question.
Do you think that the most important event in human history,
when the Eternal God, put on the human garment of Christ,
came to earth, to be rejected, tortured, and cruelly killed,
for each one of us, can every be swept under the carpet,
as a non event?
Satan would like you to believe that it can be forgotten,
and that it is irrelevant.
It will never happen, not now, not ever, never.
The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
will be observed, for all Eternity.
The first Passover, looked forward thousands of years in the future,
when Christ would come, and be slain, for each and every one of us,
in order to pay the penalty, for our individual sins.
Around 2,000 years ago Christ died for all humanity,
as our Passover Lamb, just once.
In Eternity, by definition there is no time,
therefore many things took place in Eternity,
and then they were subsequently accomplished in time and space.
Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him,
whose names are not written in the book of life of
the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Without the horrific sacrifice of Christ as our Passover,
there would be literally nothing, no future whatsoever.
The world would self destruct and that would be the end.
Let us give thanks to our Eternal God, for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Our entire future rested on this one supreme act.
